4 Jan 74 Townsville Qld 2050hrs 10mins 1M Onley Radar
Unusual radar echo on type 277F meteorological radar. Overcast sky with rain areas. Radar echo first seen 85-87 deg el 280 deg az. Later 90 deg el. Bearing 280 deg through 360 deg to 140 deg. Noted at 11 nautical miles 66,000 feet. Then descended to 4.600 feet in 10 minutes. Last seen 85-90 deg el 140 deg true. Heavy pulsing on all radar scanning plus “A” scan blotted trace. Radar parked and turned down. Investigating officer states “Mr Onley estimates that the actual length of the echo was about 2,800 yards. DCA radar technicians suggested that the radar may have experienced a period of “heavy pulsing” during the range wind down stage. Mr Onley is quite certain that this was not the case, and the radar has not displayed this type of malfunction since the unusual echo was sighted.”
