Description: "As I was walking along the Kangaroo Point cliffs I noticed what I initially thought was Mars. However, as I watched I noticed the light moving slowly for about 10-15 second and stop for the same period and move again for 2-3 mins and stop for a short time and move again.

Due to the recent hot days there was some haze in the sky and being so close to the city (across the river) the light prevented almost all stars from being seen. I was surprised that Mars was in this position in the sky - @55% elevation in the WSW area of the sky - which is why I was studying the light. I watched for about 20 mins until buildings obscured the light. I thought that it might be a helicopter or light aircraft heading for Archerfield Airport but the height, movement, and lack of any navigation lights did not correlate with that theory.

The object appeared to be larger or brighter at the front and travelled from over Kenmore towards Acacia Ridge."

Approach Direction: Moving from WSW towards South
Departure Direction: From WSW to S
Witness Direction: WSW
Colour/Shape: Orange/red - very similar to Mars when it ti at it’s brightest. Looked similar to a very bright star when stationary. Looked like a bright star with a dimmer star ‘attached to the back.
Height & Speed: Higher than domestic aircraft - it appeared to be very high but not in orbit. Speed was fairly slow - like a helicopter over the city. I did not notice any decrease/increase in speed before it stopped/stared.

Dean M of Hobart (Tas.) was driving towards Victoria from NSW last Wednesday (October 3rd) with his wife, when the car broke down. They stayed at a motel in Yass. At about 10.20 pm Dean went outside for a cigarette. While looking north towards Goulburn he noticed a whitish-orange light that flickered,.was very bright and large. It suddenly took off at an amazing speed...so fast that it was hard to follow it with your eyes. It also turned very fast without slowing down. The object made very sudden turns, changing red when turning. It was circular to oblong in shape. The object’s shape kept changing. It was often ‘out of focus’ or hazy in appearence...making it very difficult to watch. Very hard on the eyes. It would also disappear and then reappear. No sound was heard. It even occasionally ‘split’ into two and then recombined . It would accelerate at an amazing pace and stop dead. Dean made sure his wife saw it too. "We watched it for about an hour". "We still don’t know what it was" George Simpson AUFORN VIC

Nikolaus said he couldn’t believe his eyes when this thing flew over my house. He said "I was so shocked I couldn’t call out to my mum who was inside and by the time I got my self together it had gone." I called the police and explained what I saw, they seemed to be interested in my report. When asked if he called the hotline he said no I didn’t, so how did you get my number. Nikolaus now thinks the police may have called for him. Triple M called Nikolaus and asked for him to talk about his UFO sighting on the radio. Diane Harrison AUFORN

Description: "It was the first Monday after the school holidays. We were driving south from Dayboro to our house at Samsonvale (Kobble Creek) when we struck a dog crossing the road. We turned into a nearby house to ask if they owned the dog. As we entered the driveway a orange, oval shaped object in the sky caught my eye. It moved slowly to the left and then suddenly shifted its course diagonally downward. It disappeared behind a shed. The orange glowed brightly but did not change. As soon as I saw it I new it was something weird.

Approach Direction: From the south
Departure Direction: Diagonally down in a northward direction.

Two witnesses had been out walking on a property. On returning home they sat on the verandah looking at the southern sky. One pointed out to the other a half circle shape just west of the Southern Cross. It looked opaque inside but had a well defined edge and was two times the size of the moon. The object changed to more of a round shape as it moved left a short distance before returning to its original position. It then moved slowly to the right and became stationary. the witnesses said it was there a long time before it seemingly just disappeared in mid-air. No other calls were received for what was a sighting of some duration. No astronomical explanations were found to account for the report. Keith Roberts TUFOIC

This report comes from Hopetown in the Mallee district .

Star like object, ow in sky. It changed colour and moved about etc. When Michael said that the same object was there 2 nights ago...and that he watched it for 3 or so hours then I began to realise he was probably watching an unfamiliar NATURAL object. I surmised it might have been CANOPUS....low in the south/west. I checked the direction,.time and date of the sightings in ‘Skyglobe’ on my computer.( which I again highly recommend all researchers should download and use)...and there..right where Michael was looking was CANOPUS. I would put the movement down to optical illusion in this case as there was no reference point for the witness....so it was easy for the eye to drift around. George Simpson AUFORN VIC

Description: "What appeared to be a small orange glow was seen moving slowly to the west. After observing for approx.... 2 mins a small part of the item fell to earth - appeared to be burning as sparks and flame were witnessed. This allowed me to more accurately judge the position and height - appeared to be approx.... 500 metres in the air and was small - only the glow was seen - no object. Shortly later the main glow also dropped to earth in the vicinity of Mitchell St/Settlement Rd. Possibly burning debris from a fire? Check with Fire Communications revealed no working fires in the vicinity at the time."

Sean couldn’t sleep in the early hours of Friday morning and decided to go outside for a smoke. It was approximately 3.40am when a very bright light, moving "quite fast", caught his eye. The object described as a " shooting star going upwards" came from the SouthEast and seemed to travel past the moon where it faded from sight.

It was a clear night, little wind and the object made no sound. The incident lasted about 1 to 2 seconds and fascinated Sean so much he immediately scanned the internet for UFO related sites to report his sighting. Veronica Moore INFODIG

Ita and her daughter Sue E live on the north side of the Williams Town RAAF Base. At approximately 8.30pm on Monday 15 October on a clear night Ita decided to retrieve some washing from the line when she notice an object to the south of the base. The object was stationary, larger than a star, reddish in colour and "long" in shape. She watched it for 10 to 15 minutes and then decided to call her daugther, Sue E. Together they continued to watch the object that periodically moved up and down and sideways. After about another 15 minutes Sue E became frightened and they both decided to go inside. Ita said the object was still in the same position when they went to bed.

The reportees have lived near the base for quite a while and both are used to seeing various types of aircraft. They both agreed they had never observed anything like this near the base before.

Although after chatting to me for a while Ita confided that several years ago she saw a huge cylinder shaped object glide over leaving a trail behind it and her other daughter was terrified when one night when on the way home from Nelsons Bay she was buzzed by a disc shaped object.

An interesting report and another family touched by the UFO phenomena. Veronica Moore INFODIG Central Coast

Witness reports noticing a bright star approaching from the south-west, at first the witness thought it was a plane, but then it stopped in the sky for some 10 to 15 minutes. The witness obtained some binoculars but could only make out a light with yellow on top and blue below. Then two more lights approached from the south-west, they took a position alongside the first light. Then to the witnesses’ amazement all three went vertically at enormous speed and were lost from sight in seconds. Keith Roberts TUFOIC

James Kennedy phoned Mr Lee Sunday 21/10/01 (famous anniversary). Mr Lee is ex Western Australian UFO Research Society. The object described by Mr Lee is very similar to what was witnessed by myself, Leonie Kennedy and the chap from Kangaroo Island not so long ago. It was Friday 19/10/01 when Mr Lee was in his backyard watching the sky when an object was travelling high in the North sky, flashing an intermittent bright light. It went out of view due to cloud cover and Mr Lee’s tree. Mr Lee was a very interesting chap to talk to. James Kennedy AUFORN VIC

I responded to Snr Constable G’s call and was informed a John C had reported what looked like a plane burning up in the sky. Snr Constable G gave me the number to contact John C. John and his wife were travelling from Blayney to Bathurst at approx 7.50pm when they noticed a bright white/silver light travelling from East to West accross the horizon. The object then exploded, giving off debris of yellow and later red in colour. The object appeared very low in the atmosphere and at first did not appear to have a trace but later observation showed a trace or tail. Duration of the event approx 5 seconds. Appears to have been a ferric based meteor with perhaps traces of magnesium, given the very white glow and the low altitude in the atmosphere it achieved. Ferric based meteors tend to last longer in the atmosphere and thus get lower than carbonacious meteors and are probably more likely to have trace elements such as magnesium, if that’s what it was, than carbonacious meteors. To add brilliance to the sighting, the Moon was a small crescent and the skies in that part of the world are inky black, a great place for a sky watch! Doug Moffett AUFORN NSW

I spoke to Mavis on sunday 18.11.01. She is a grandmother and suffers from M.S. Her occupation is a clinical therapist she teaches relaxation and meditation. She belonged to a UFO group in Woy Woy about 18 months ago. On the morning of Saturday 20.10.01 Mavis told me she meditated strongly and saw a flash of light she feels this is connected somehow to the sighting that occurred. That evening around 10pm she and two of her friends were sitting on her verandah when in the east over the water they all saw a falling object. It fell for a long time and looked very bright. As they watched it looked as if the sky parted and something from above East fell from the sky right in front of them. It was bright and round an iridescent blue colour with a silvery pinkish glow around the outside it pulsated and was larger than the moon. It shot towards them and over the rooftop much too low for usual aviation. There was no sound and it had a silvery white trail. Mavis and her friends said it was very beautiful and gave them a peaceful feeling. The sighting lasted about 30secs. Mavis also told me she has been getting spider web stuff on her plants since Christmas last year. She had heard this was significant in UFO sightings. She has invited me to go have a look but Kempsey is a few hours away from me. Maybe a closer investigator could go. Larraine Cilia UFOSWS

Steve Evans was in his backyard in the outer suburb of Avoca on October 21, 2001, when his partner and he observed a string of five bright orange lights traveling north at treeline height for 5 to 10 minutes. A singular bright orange light was observed first before other’s appeared behind it at close intervals at 9:20pm. A line of five bright orange lights were visible over about half the southern sky. They moved slowly north in a uniform line until the third object dropped in altitude, but not in speed. They passed just below the Moon (quarter) except for the fourth object, which went through the Moon’s light. They continued moving north slowly and became less bright before disappearing. The objects were much brighter and larger than the closest star and traveled without any audible sound. The night was clear and fine. The objects displayed no characteristic similarities to any aircraft. Each light, being the whole entity, and remained a constant bright orange light with no flashing observed. They were traveling in a rising angle. The Moon and stars were clearly seen. A vague oval shape was observed from a side view when the fourth object passed through the light of the Moon. Before this, all five objects appeared round in shape. After sighting the objects, we accessed some information on the Internet where we found information and photographs of orange orbs and orange ball phenomenon closely matching what we had observed. The object was bright and travelling at a constant speed, like a satelite only brighter. It kept its course over Bankstown heading towards Hornsby NNE. The object was more than likely the International Space Station.

I would be surprised if a Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite would be visible at that time in the morning. (1:50am) At those kind of times, the earth’s shadow covers most of the sky and if not illuminated by the sun, a satellite is not visible to the naked eye.

I would expect any satellites that might be illuminated would be in a high orbit, or relatively low to the horizon. Generally, that would result in such satellites being rather *dim* not bright. (Most people wouldn’t see them unless specifically looking for them.)

I have done a preliminary whole sky scan of all 8400 orbiting objects, looking for passes visible from Hornsby NSW, between 1:40am and 1:50am.

The two brightest were...

24829 Cosmos 2344 Rk (Mag 5.4)
20720 Cosmos 2088 (Mag 5.8)

5.4 magnitude is ‘very’ dim. I wouldn’t expect it to be visible to the unaided eye from a suburban location, let alone described as "bright".

Now, predictions can be wrong, satellites can flare, etc. etc. however, taking into consideration the time of the sighting and the description of "bright", I think the satellite hypothesis is unlikely.

Could it have been an aircraft? (Aircraft normally have flashing lights that should have been obvious. Without that, it seems a bit of a mystery.)

Do you have enough information to work out an approximate track the object took? (Where first sighted, where lost to sight, direction etc.) Kate Martin

I’m waiting for a response from NASA, confirming the position of the ISS on 23rd October. I agree to your response regarding call in code 01810, to a certain point. Let me explain:

On 23rd Oct. the given celestial bodies were in the following position:

1. Sunrise at 5.05am and sunset at 6.17pm. The Earth was facing 180 degrees from our friendly Solar at approximately 11.40pm.
2. The Moon was at its first quarter. Lunar set was at 12.40am.
3. The sighting occurred around 1.15am. At that time the Earth had progressed 24 degrees towards dawn and 9 degrees from lunar set.

I agree to a certain point (taking the above event into count) that any low orbiting satellites would not reflect any sunlight, especially if the orbiting object is 90 degrees form the observer. However, any high altitude satellites would reflect some light from the solar if positioned low in the eastern horizon (approximately 20-30 degrees). Satellites with high enough altitudes would also be visible in the lower northern and southern horizons. On the other hand, light reflecting off the lunar surface would somewhat be visible on low orbiting satellites, obviously more towards the west. Also lets not forget about refraction from our very own planet.

So I believe that:

A, The unknown may have been a satellite, unregistered to public
information.
B, Other form of terrestrial spacecraft.
C, Or what we&Mac226; re all hoping it was!

Second hand information can be sometimes a little unreliable, especially if the details vary from the original report.

Any way, I do appreciate your input and I do admit that I did jump to a conclusion without proper study. Attila Kaldy UFOSWS

John, Brenda’s husband went outside and noticed towards the SouthWest end of Lake Macquarie three golden lights in the sky. They appeared to be hovering at 20 to 30 degrees above the horizon and he watched them for approximately 5 minutes. He called to his wife and son ( John Jrn ) to join him and together they saw a 4th orange light appear. They continued to watch for another 3 minutes. Suddenly one light left very quickly as it "disappeared straight up", another two rose up as well, but slowly and the remaining one went backwards and faded from sight.

The night was clear with no moon and quite still. The objects were slightly larger than a star and appeared to have a halo type glow. The family also noticed their cat was "spooked" and the dog hid under the lounge. Veronica Moore INFODIG

Amy lives on a remote property in Picton. She said she took her dogs out before retiring Tuesday night and a light through the trees caught her eye. It was morning and as she watched it, it came into clear view. She was amazed to see a huge triangular, boomerang shaped object hovering above. She described it as being a dull light glow, the whole thing was glowing, there were flashing lights and was much too low for an aeroplane. She said it was no more then 30 or so storeys high and as bag as a 4WD. She said it seemed to have huge over sixed triangular wings attatched to a small body. There was no sound as she watched it, it moved away from her going south until she could hardly see it and then it came back to its original position, it did this about 20 times in an anti-clockwise direction. Amy said it was not a searchlight or beacon. The object then stopped over the house approximately 100 metres away. She said the moon was on her left and this object was much bigger. There were very few clouds in the sky but there was a strange grill like cloud the object came back to and as it went into the cloud it was very faint, then it reappeared and circled again in and out of this cloud like it was useing it as a cover, she said there were other clouds like it in the sky. Amy said it seemed to be circling to Nowra way. She phoned friends at Picton who also watched it but didnt have a camera and her boyfriend also saw it. As they watched a plain crossed its path but nothing happend. they watched it for about 40mins and went to bed. Amy was visibly spooked by the encounter and wants to move. Larraine Cilia UFOSWS

Jenny was reporting a sighting that her friends, Evan and his wife, had witnessed between 9-9.30pm on 31/10/01 while picking up three children from a school dance. She suggested I call the " previously sceptical " Evan for a more detailed report.

Evan was excited and shocked when I rang but was happy to tell of his experience. He said he used to scoff at UFO reports but now that’s all changed.

Evan, his wife and three children were travelling along a lonely country road, about 30 minutes from Gloucester between 9.00 - 9.30pm when they looked up into the sky and noticed a yellowish coloured light, much brighter than a star. It appeared to be sitting in one position.

As they came closer they could see 2 orbs of yellow light with a row of smaller lights( which sometimes flashed). He described the night as crystal clear, very still and with almost a full moon.

The object or objects, he was unsure which, although he felt it might be solid, remained stationary. There was no sound and they passed almost under the object. They felt a "bit worried" and did not stop, but kept watch behind them until they reached Jenny’s home.

The object was still in view behind them for several kilometres. When they reached Jenny’s they looked through the binoculars and could see the glow of the object in the distance.

The next morning Evan mentioned it to a workmate who commented that his son had witnessed a UFO the same evening. Evan will encourage this witness to ring the UFO hotline. Veronica Moore INFODIG

This report is related to Callin: 01824 31/10/01

Mark of Bundook decided to call the hotline to report his sighting of 31/10/01 (between 9pm and 10pm) after encouragement from his father and Evan. (callin: 01824 31/10/01)

Mark has been interested in looking at the sky each night for the last few months. The 31/10/01 was a clear, moonlit night when Mark noticed a very bright star towards the south, almost on the horizon. It suddenly started to move and then slowly dropped down after approximately 15 to 20 seconds. Then it faded from sight.

Mark was fascinated by the event and felt it was out of the ordinary. He reported the sighting to his dad that night, which of course mentioned it to Evan, by chance the next morning.

Also on the night of 30/10/01 towards the southeast at approximately 8.30pm, Mark noticed a bright star quite high in the sky that seemed to be moving "diagonally". It travelled behind a cloud and was not seen again. Veronica Moore INFODIG
